The Game

2011-12 basketball season has arrived! And as such, so has THE GAME. THE GAME was originally created by netlord (of ESPN College Basketball Board fame) as a fun competition stretched over the length of the college basketball season. Over the years it has evolved into an annual tradition, and a complex automated spreadsheet.

THE GAME will not only test your ability to correctly pick the winners of games, but will also reward you handsomely for being able to guess the scores. The Top 64 players at the end of the season face off against each other head to head by picking tournament games. Just like March Madness, one bad day will send you packing.

So how does one play THE GAME? It’s easy:

Anywhere from 4 to 8 games with the Vegas line for those games will be listed on our College Basketball Board. Each player will have to pick the scores and winners for those games. You must pick the scores of all games listed for that day. You will also get the option to Double Down (DD) or Shoot the Moon (STM) on certain games. Doing so will allow you to double (DD) or quadruple (STM) your points on any given game, if you pick the game correctly against the spread (ATS). Be careful, as getting those picks wrong will cost you more points. You do not have to DD or STM if you do not want to, as It’s a high risk-high reward system.

It's like Vegas, minus the bankruptcy.

1) For correctly selecting the winner of each game Against the Spread (ATS):

a. Normal: 25pts for correctly picking ATS and 0 points for picking incorrectly.
b. DD: 50pts for correctly picking ATS and -50 points for picking incorrectly.
c. STM: 100pts for correctly picking ATS and -100 points for picking incorrectly.

EXAMPLE:
Ohio State @ Michigan ( Line = OSU by 20.5)
• Your pick: Ohio State-76, Michigan-54 (DD).
• Actual score: Ohio State-72, Michigan-53.

You would be awarded -50 pts for incorrectly doubling down on OSU. While you did correctly predict OSU would win the game, the points bet was against the spread. Unfortunately, OSU won by only 19pts, which means Michigan won ATS since the line was OSU by 20.5pts.

2) Bonus Points: Accurately picking the number of points each team will score in every given game.

Normal:
a. 1 pt for being 5 points off a team’s final score.
b. 2 pts for being 4 points off a team’s final score.
c. 4 points for being 3 points off a team’s final score.
d. 6 points for being 2 points off a team’s final score.
e. 8 points for being 1 point of a team’s final score.
f. 10 points for hitting a team’s score on the head.
g. 0 points for anything else

DD: If you were correct with picking ATS, you get 2X the amount of points you normally would. If you were incorrect picking ATS, you get 0 points (Even if you hit the score on the head!).

STM: If you were correct with picking ATS, you get 4X the amount of points you normally would. If you were incorrect picking ATS, you get 0 points (Even if you hit the score on the head!).

EXAMPLE: Ohio State @ Michigan (Line = OSU by 20.5)
• Your pick: Ohio State-76, Michigan-54.
• Actual score: Ohio State-72, Michigan-53.

It's tempting to Shoot The Moon, but be careful.

In this scenario, you would be awarded 2 pts for correctly picking OSU’s score within 4 points and 8 pts for Michigan’s score for being within 1 point of their final score, for a total of 12 bonus points. Had you DD’d or STM’d you would’ve been awarded 0 points for picking incorrectly ATS. If you were correct in picking ATS though, the DD would’ve netted you 24 pts and the STM 48pts.

3) Bonus Points: Accurately picking the final score point differential of every given game

Normal:
a. 1 pt for being 4 or 5 points off final point differential.
b. 2 pts for being 3 points off the final point differential.
c. 3 points for being 2 points off the final point differential.
d. 4 points for being 1 point off the final point differential.
e. 5 points for nailing the final point differential.
f. 0 points for anything else.

DD: If you were correct picking ATS, you get 2X the amount of points you normally would. If you were incorrect picking ATS, you get 0 points (Even if you hit the differential on the head!).

STM: If you were correct picking ATS, you get 4X the amount of points you normally would. If you were incorrect picking ATS, you get 0 points (Even if you hit the differential on the head!).

EXAMPLE: Ohio State @ Michigan (Line = OSU by 20.5)
• Your pick: Ohio State-76, Michigan-54.
• Actual score: Ohio State-72, Michigan-53.

You would be awarded 2 pts for picking OSU +22pts versus the actual OSU +19pts, for being three points off on the final score differential. Had Michigan actually won by 19 points you would be awarded 0 points because your score differential is actually |22 – -19| = 41, not 3. Had you DD’d or STM’d you would’ve been awarded 0 points for picking incorrectly ATS. If you were correct in picking ATS though, the DD would’ve netted you 4 pts and the STM 8pts.

THE GAME Tournament

The 64 players with the most points at the end of the season make THE GAME Tournament. Your regular season points are used to determine seeding. There are advantages to being a high seed, as you get to pick your region if you’re Top 16, and you get bonus points every round based on the percent of points you have compared to the top and bottom score compiled in the regular season.

The more often you play, the more opportunities you’ll have for points. If you have questions, drop by the message board and let us know.

First games are Friday, November 11th. Good luck!

  2. Firstly, the tournament is 68 teams. Why do only the top 64 advance in this format?
Secondly, would not this be considered theft? This idea is neither new or original. A true elitist jerk would never use an other’s idea.
    Lastly, I’m in. All in.

  3. 1. I have no clue. Do you expect us to expand already?

    2. A true elitist jerk would never admit to using another’s idea.

  4. Hehehe- 68 teams, huh? I can make that change. The reason I didn’t include it last year was it wasn’t necessary as we didn’t have 68 players last year. If we get that many people, I’ll include it but I likely won’t add on spaces for it to the Regional brackets as that would unfortunately take a lot of time with the setup.

As for the second point, this began as an idea created by a user called netlord and I have credited him for it. A couple years back, netlord didn’t have the time necessary to keep track of it and I took over with his blessing. I adapted my B10 Tournament game and spreadsheet and automated it. THE GAME is now an amalgam of both games. I don’t think wagering on games or gambling is a unique idea nor am I claiming it, but I can guarantee you the scoring system and rules of play are quite unique along with the automated spreadsheet and system of play. I would never actively take from someone else without their permission and I guarantee you that this scoring system and spreadsheet is unique. I welcome you to THE GAME
