Tonight, BCS #1 Alabama and #2 Texas play for the college football national championship*. I don’t intend to fill this post with rehashed analysis such as the staunch Alabama defense, Heisman winners in the big game, SEC vs Big XII in bowl games, etc. Instead, I want to rant and rave like a possessed two year old with the knowledge from the beginning that a playoff is unlikely in the near future.

But as a native Southerner, my friends always ask me: “How can you like the NFL better than college football?” Then they lists the various reasons: 100,000 seat stadiums, nasty rivalries, kids playing for the name on the front of the jersey rather than the back (I disagree, but that’s another discussion), and so forth. All great reasons. In fact, I want to like college football more than the NFL. I want to love it.

I really want to, but I can’t. How can I put faith into a sport more scripted than the WWE? Four to five teams a year have a shot at playing for the championship and those few teams are hand-picked by sportswriters before a game is ever played. How asinine is that?

We can all argue ’til we drop dead about strength of schedule, conference affiliation, etc., but hasn’t Boise State done enough to deserve some attention? They’ve beaten mighty Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. They’ve beaten another undefeated, non-BCS team in TCU just the other night. They went to Oregon a year ago and won. They hosted the Ducks on the blue turf last August and won again. They’re playing Oregon State and Virginia Tech next season. And arguably, BSU will have the best team on paper then. But, will they ever be given a chance?

The game of college football has evolved. It will no longer be dominated by USC, Oklahoma, Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama, etc. Sure, those programs will still put forth good teams, but now they will contend with non-traditional powers. And it isn’t time we adapt along with the game?

Good morning, homies. Here’s hoping you’ve all sufficiently recovered from “mid-major Monday”. Speaking of which…

  • In a game that proved absolutely nothing, #6 Boise State beat #4 TCU 17-10 in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl last night. By pitting both “BCS busters” against each other, the powers that be effectively neutralized any argument that either team might have a claim to the National Championship. Would one-loss Florida have killed either one of these teams in the Sugar Bowl like they did Cincinnati? Probably, but we’ll never know for sure. Boise State fans have to feel like they’ve been ripped off yet again.
  • In contrast, College of Charleston fans have to be on top of the world following last night’s upset victory over #9 UNC. Hosting their highest ranked opponent ever, the Cougars took advantage by out shooting and out hustling the Tarheels in overtime. These types of games are why you rarely see elite level teams playing mid-majors on the road. The risk versus reward ratio always plays into the under-dog’s favor. The Heels now have 4 OOC losses after playing a very difficult schedule. Will the Selection Committee reward them for challenging themselves early? It’ll be interesting to see where they end up.
  • If you haven’t seen Don’tEvenReply.com, then you’re really missing out. The guy basically prank e-mails people in response to their ads with hilarious results. Here’s an excerpt:

  • Dating web site BeatifulPeople.com reportedly kicked out 5,000 members for getting fat over the Holidays. The site’s founder had this to say, “Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded.” Thank goodness he’s a man of principle.

  • Love em‘ or hate em’ the College Football bowl games are now set. Prominently featured: Alabama vs. Texas for the “BCS Title” and TCU vs. Boise St. for the “This Proves Nothing Title”.
  • Speaking of which, Sports Pickle reports that the participants are set for the F–kYou.com Bowl.
  • Deadspin has a rundown on the buffet of booty that Tiger has supposedly sampled.
  • Urban Meyer was treated for dehydration following the Gators loss to Alabama. The coach was reportedly given an IV drip of Tebow Tears and can now circumcise little boys blind-folded.

Here we are at the end of the college football regular season. Here are the AP and USA Today final regular season polls but we here at EJSIC are pretty sure we can do better because, to us, all that matters are the teams, who they’ve played, and who they’ve beaten.

BS Series Title Game Is Set.

bcsLogoLooking about as unimpressive as is possible without losing, Texas secured a bid to the BCS title game by defeating an offensively challenged Nebraska team in the Big 12 Championship Game. The Long Horns will now face Alabama, who throttled #1 Florida in the SEC Title Game.

The reality of the situation is that there’s no way on God’s Green Earth that anyone other than Texas will be playing Alabama for the title. However, we at the EJSIC aren’t always the biggest fans of reality. It’s boring.

To that point, taking out all financial and political considerations, who do you think deserves to challenge Alabama for the BCS title in Pasadena?

Here we are following week 8 of the college football season. The AP and ESPN have their week 9 polls out and we here at EJSIC appreciate their efforts, but in the interest of the fans, we feel it’s better for us to provide a real poll for your viewership. It’s not based on media hype for next week’s games, any ridiculous key words (the wildcat), or any other nonsense – all that matters are the teams, who they’ve played, and who they’ve beaten.
